Doss Tidwell, Jr. Obituary (1968 - 2014)

Doss Tidwell, Jr., was born in Galveston, Texas on December 24, 1968 and he passed away on October 22, 2014 at the Methodist Hospital of Houston, Texas. At 45 years old, he leaves behind his cherished wife of 15 years, the former Emily Sue Hobbs of Cincinnati, Ohio, as well as a host of family and friends who adored him. Born to Doss, Sr. and Jimmie Campbell Tidwell of Texas City, Texas, Doss grew up in a Christian home and became a devout member of Bell Zion Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. He attended school in the LaMarque School District and developed an interest in electronics, drafting, woodwork, and architecture. He was also skilled with athletic ability and played basketball during his junior and senior year. Upon graduating from LaMarque High School in 1987, Doss attended the Tampa Technical Institute where he further developed his technical skills and achieved a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering. Doss had a rewarding career in technology and was employed as a networking Instructor at the National Institute of Technology; Network Analyst at the University of Texas Medical Branch; Information Technology Consultant/Administrator at JD Professional Services in the Woodlands; Senior Systems Analyst at Hermann Hospital; Information Technology Consultant/Administrator at Exxon Mobil and Conoco; and a Senior Network Analyst at St. Luke's Hospital; Early in his career he also owned his own computer repair business called Doss Systems. Years later, Doss reinvented himself and began honing his skills on the side as a photographer, a family hobby inspired by his father when he was 13 years old. He became an entrepreneur under the company name Photography by Doss in 2001 and was quickly renowned as a gifted photographer throughout Texas. He was also especially known for his artistic ability to show his clients in their best, most confident light and enhance their natural beauty...this was his passion. His technical skills were sharpened further as he became a self-taught in lighting, photo editing, and airbrushing. He also expanded his business to provide headshots to hundreds of realtors and title companies around the city. Doss was also a proud member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated - Galveston Alumni chapter in 1996. Doss met the love of his life Emily in 1997. They fell in love and were wed in 1999 in Cincinnati, Ohio. They lived in marital bliss and were inseparable in most all aspects of their new life together. After they moved from Houston to League City to be near family, Doss led them to join Greater St. Matthews Baptist Church. He was a jovial person who believed in living life to the fullest. He enjoyed learning new things by reading; discussing and implementing new ideas for his photography business; traveling, watching movies, going to concerts, festivals and the theater with his wife and their friends; and taking long drives along the Galveston seawall and around the city in his convertible mustang and later, his convertible corvette. Most of all, Doss loved to laugh and make others laugh. Doss is preceded in death by his father, Doss Tidwell, Sr. and mother, Jimmie Campbell Tidwell; his father-in-law, Eddie Hobbs and mother-in-law, Susie M. Hobbs; uncles, Walter Tidwell, Alvin Campbell, Forest Campbell, and Arthur Herndon; and aunts, Atrie Tidwell, Gussie Harris, Ena Harris, Dorothy Markray, Helen White; and nephews, nieces, extended family members and friends. He leaves behind his cherished family members, including sisters Sharon Tidwell, (Texas City, TX) and Karen Tidwell Bright, (Marshall, TX); sister-in-law Edna Gibbs (Cincinnati, Ohio); brother-in-law Calvin P.Gentry (Marian) (Cincinnati, Ohio); nieces and nephews: Bella Bright and Bijou Bright (Marshall, TX); Amber Wilks, Quincy Wilks, Jan'el Gentry, Jermaine Gentry, Joel Gentry (Amber), Daija Hughes, Chephren Hughes II, Demera Lawrence, Trey Gentry, Joel Gentry II, and Amaya Gentry (Cincinnati, Ohio); god-daughter Alana Lindsey (League City, TX); and many other beloved family and friends. The funeral and home-going celebration of Doss Tidwell, Jr. will be held Saturday, November 1, 2014, 11:00 a.m., at greater St. Matthews Baptist Church, 6333 Highway 6, Hitchcock, TX 77563. Rev. William L. Randall, Jr., will officiate the service. The family is wearing a color of crimson to honor the memory of Doss. A visitation will be held Friday, October 31, 6 pm-8 pm at Carnes Funeral Home, 3100 Gulf Freeway, Texas City, TX 77591.
