Henry E. Fleming Obituary (1942 - 2019)

Henry E. Fleming, 77, of Hitchcock, passed away Oct. 5, 2019 after fighting an unforgivable battle with aggressive stage IV melanoma (skin cancer). He was born August 24, 1942 in Miami, FL and grew up in Cartersville, GA. Henry is preceded in death by his parents, Graham and S. Louise Fleming. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Fleming of 32 years, Melissa and Robert Judson and their children; daughter and son-in-law of Texas City, Angela Young and her children Devon and Carter of Omaha, NE; daughter, Steven Fleming of Omaha, NE; son, Susie and Jimmy Chamberlain and their children of Marshall, TX; daughter and son-in-law. Survivors also include distant relatives and friends from all over the world, all of whom Henry was always in contact with. Henry worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a Civil Engineering Technician for the Flood Plan Management Department for 38 years and retired January 3, 2003. He was a very dedicated and professional employee and was so much fun to be around. He always seemed to have such a vast knowledge of so many things and such a sense of humor. Prior to becoming a Civil Engineering Technician, Henry was a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve from January 1962 to July 1962. He served two weeks on the USS Lexington in Corpus Christi and was very proud to serve, support and defend his country. Henry was also well-known for being a nice, courteous, generous, smart and inquisitive individual. Many will miss their conversations with him about numerous subjects; boats, trains, guns, guitars, history, household projects, as well our Lord and Savior. Henry loved to travel the world but only where it was warm; he was never fond of cold weather but rather sunny beaches and blue water. He felt every boat had a soul with a story. He couldn't stand to see an abandoned boat especially after a bad storm. Unfortunately Henry had to weather his own bad storm, but is now on a new journey filled with many conversations with his Lord and Savior. He will be missed by many but will always live in our hearts.
