Hiram Maynard Clark Obituary (1928 - 2018)

Hiram Maynard Clark was born on May 8, 1928, in Athens, Texas, the middle child of W.O. and Beulah Clark. He is preceded in death by his Mother, Father, 2 brothers, 1 niece, 1 nephew and his wife of 62 years, Annie Laura. Maynard got his first name, Hiram, from his Dad's brother who died when he was 3 years old. Maynard was a name his mother picked after a not so famous poem called "Maynard's Red Shirt". Maynard's father was an oilfield worker who moved the family multiple times a year. Maynard stated that he attended 9 schools in one school year. Maynard leaves behind 3 sons, Eugene Clark, Andy Clark (Velda), and Dowen Johnson (Twila); and daughter, Missy Lane (Mickey). He is survived by 8 grandchildren: Dana, Button, Daniel, and Skye Clark, Erin Schlageter, Andrew Clark II, Chuck and David Johnson. He was great-grandfather to Devon, Michaela, Maverick, Bella, Alexis, Bailey, Taylor and Emma Clark, Logan Moy, Lainey Schlageter, Baylor, Luke, Lance and Lane Johnson. Maynard graduated from Pasadena High School in 1946. He was co-captain of the football team. He joined the Marine Air Corp after High School and served on an aircraft carrier. Upon discharge he attended Kilgore Jr. College and studied Business Administration. Shortly after that he was drafted into the Army where he was stationed in Japan and Korea. He served as a supply sergeant. After the service Maynard went to work at Houston Light and Power where he met the love of his life, Annie Laura. They married in 1953. Once they were married, he returned to school and graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration in 1957. Maynard continued to work for various businesses doing accounting work. He retired from Houston Radiology. Maynard loved golfing. His passion for golf began in 1969 and in his later years was able to brag that he "shot his age". He quit golfing at the age of 85 because of physical disabilities. Maynard learned to enjoy reading, Sudoku, crossword puzzles and word jumbles when he could no longer play golf. He would also tell a joke every day to whomever would listen. Although Maynard was a private person, he made it clear that he was ready to go to Heaven. Now he is playing as much golf as he wants. The family would like to give special thanks to Laura Murray for her 4 years of service as a provider. The family would also like to thank Traditions Hospice, Dr. Prince and the nurses of the 2nd floor at Mainland Medical Center. Pallbearers will be his 2 sons and 6 grandsons. Guests are invited to share in a Celebration of Life Visitation from 6-8:00 pm, Friday, January 26, 2018 at Carnes Funeral Home - Texas City, 3100 Gulf Freeway, TX 77591. Funeral Services will be 10:00 am, Saturday, January 27, 2018 at First Assembly of God, 2121 6th Street, Texas City, TX 77590. Interment will follow at 3:00 pm at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston.
