Texas City, Texas
In a world that often takes itself too seriously, Janie Elizondo Rivera added a dash of humor and a sprinkle of joy. Born on July 2, 1940, in Texas City, TX, Janie, or "Juana" as some dared to call her, lived a life that was as vibrant and spirited as a Texas sunset. She was funny, loving, courageous, and witty, all wrapped up in one unforgettable package. Janie, who passed away on April 14, 2026, was a lifelong resident of Texas City and even survived the Texas City disaster of 1947.
Janie's life was nothing if not full. Whether she was playing bingo on Friday nights with her mother and daughter, or cleaning up at LRC, Janie was always in the thick of things. She had a love for the Astros and the Texans, and would even watch the Cowboys “only because it was her dad‘s favorite team." She worked at Mainland Laundry with her mom until it closed, and then went on to package meat in local grocery stores in Galveston county. She wrapped up her working years at Santa Fe ISD in 2003, proving that retirement was merely a word, not a sentence.
Janie's greatest love was her daughter, Andrea, and her grand dog, Roxy, who was her loving companion. She loved attending her nieces and nephews' Sporting event's, dancing and She never missed a party, she was always the first one there and the last to leave! Her love for life, her courage and strength in the face of adversities, and her infectious sense of humor will be tremendously missed.
Janie is survived by her daughter, Andrea (Kenneth) Rivera, her siblings, Annie Segura, Ralph (Rosemary) Elizondo, Ricardo (Ernestine) Elizondo, her sister-in-law, Elena Elizondo, Billie Elizondo, and brother-in-law, Mario Rivera. She was preceded in death by her parents, Juan Elizondo and Olivia Elizondo, her brothers, Robert and Jerry Elizondo, her sister, Birdie (Louis) Pedraza, and Brother-in-law Paul Segura Jr.
A visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at 10:00am CST at Carnes Funeral Home. A Celebration of Janie's life will follow at 12:00pm CST.

Janie was a woman who lived life on her own terms, and in doing so, she left an indelible mark on all who knew her. We invite you to share your memories and upload photos of Janie to the memorial page, so that her spirit may continue to inspire and uplift us. After all, Janie wouldn't have wanted us to mourn, but to celebrate the life she so dearly loved.
