Philma John Holmes Obituary (1925 - 2014)

Philma John Holmes, 88, passed away Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at Memorial Hermann Southeast in Houston. Phil was born in Palmetto, Louisiana on September 2, 1925 to the late George Holmes Sr. and Comella Hayes. He served in the US Army. He was a cab driver in Galveston, Texas for years before serving in the U.S. Merchant Marines as a Seaman and chief cook. He was a sports fanatic person who loved all sports. Phil played in the Negro Professional Baseball League as a pitcher. He leaves to celebrate his life and cherish his memory: a loving wife, Doris; sons, Michael (Rosa) Holmes Sr. of Missouri City, Texas, Ronald (Vickie) Holmes of La Marque, Texas, Troy Holmes of Los Angeles, California; step-sons, Dennis (Sharon) Williams of League City, Texas and Michael Harris of La Marque, Texas; thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grand children. Although Dennis was his step-son he was like a son to Phil. Brothers, George (Janice) Holmes Jr. and James Holmes of Houston, Texas; sisters, Mildred Holmes of Houston, Texas, Clara (Clement) Washington of Palmetto, Louisiana and Edna (Charles) Gordon of Lafayette, Louisiana; brothers-in-law, Willie Harris of La Marque, Texas and Odell Dwight Harris of Houston, Texas one sister-in-law, Cynthia Faye Rittenhouse of Baytown, Texas; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. These were special relatives that were in his life, Comella "Pinky" Wrenn, his cousin who always checked on him and Carl Wayne Holmes, his nephew who took him to the doctor sometimes two or three times a week. Viewing will begin at 9 AM on Wednesday, February 12nd at Carnes Funeral Home, located at 3100 Gulf Freeway, Texas City, TX 77591, the funeral mass will follow. Burial will follow at the VA Cemetery in Houston.
