Richard John Cano
December 13, 1941 – October 10, 2026
Richard John Cano, 84, passed away on October 10, 2026, with Yumi, his beloved wife of 22 years, by his side.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Edward and William Cano. He is survived by his devoted wife, Yumi; his sons, Stephen of Chicago, Illinois, and John of Sargent, Texas; his grandchildren, Alyssa, Brandi, and Sean; and his great-grandchildren, Jayda and Ayden. He also leaves behind his cherished four-legged companions—his dogs, Sammie and Junior, and his cat, Cookie—who brought him so much joy.
Born on December 13, 1941, to Albert Cano and Mamie Dyke, Richard was a lifelong resident of Galveston, Texas, where he grew up on 15th Street. He graduated from Kirwin High School in 1959.
Richard began his career as a dental technician, spending more than a decade crafting dentures and other dental prosthetics. With a keen mind for business and an entrepreneurial spirit, he later founded ABC Vending, owning and operating vending machines and video games throughout Galveston County for many years.
Richard's greatest passion, however, was aviation. He spent years managing over twenty hangars at Galveston’s Airport and became a familiar and respected figure in the local aviation community. An accomplished pilot, he continued flying well into his 70s. His dedication to aviation and meticulous craftsmanship earned him national recognition at the 2013 Oshkosh Air Show, where he received the prestigious Reserve Grand Champion award and the coveted Silver Lindy.
Richard shared his love of adventure with Yumi, whom he married in 2004. For more than two decades, she was his constant companion and the love of his life. Together, they enjoyed countless adventures, from the excitement of Oshkosh to their memorable travels to Korea. Yumi brought tremendous happiness to Richard's life, and their years together were filled with love, companionship, and shared experiences.
The family will receive friends on Friday, October 16, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Carnes Funeral Home, 3100 Gulf Freeway, Texas City, Texas 77591. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 11:30 a.m. in the funeral home chapel, with a procession to the cemetery immediately afterward.
