Twyla Greer

–

Blessing, TX

Twyla Eugene Greer, 81, of Blessing, Texas, went home to be with the Lord on September 21, 2026. She was surrounded by her immediate family while receiving compassionate hospice care at the Matagorda Regional Medical Center.

Twyla was born September 15, 1945, in Baytown, Texas, to Billie Cherry and Horace Eugene Cherry. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Terry Cherry; and her stepfather, George Wacusek.

She is survived by her sister, Linda Hendricks, and brother-in-law, Erwin Hendricks; her three daughters, Kimberly Hegwood, Terry Lee, and Roberta Raymond, and son-in-law, Matthew Raymond; her grandchildren, Brittany Hegwood, Brackett Hegwood, and Rebecca Hegwood; and her great-grandchildren, Trace, Cash, Jennings, Addison, Kolten, and Owen. She also leaves behind nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and extended family members whose lives she touched over the years.

Twyla moved to Blessing, Texas in 1970 and became deeply rooted in the community she would call home for more than half a century. She retired from Formosa Plastics after 30 years of service and recently continued working as a substitute teacher for the Tidehaven Independent School District, at both the elementary to high school levels, where she was valued by students and staff alike.

One of Twyla’s greatest passions was service. She was an active and dedicated member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit at Post 649 in Blessing, where she faithfully served in several leadership roles. Her commitment extended beyond the unit level, as she also held multiple district and division offices, serving as President at each of those levels. In addition, she served as Chaplain for the Department of Texas. Throughout her years of involvement, she contributed her time to numerous committees across all four organizational levels, often taking the role of Chairman. Her leadership, service, and devotion left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of working alongside her.

Twyla was proud to have chaired the Veterans Day program at Tidehaven High School. She believed strongly that younger generations should understand the sacrifices made by veterans and the importance of recognizing and honoring their service. For Twyla, remembering veterans was not simply an annual observance; it was a sincere responsibility.

She was a member of the Matagorda County Historical Society and remained actively interested in the history and life of her community. Additionally, she served on the Blessing Historical Board and Palacios/Blessing Library Board.

Twyla approached life with energy, humor, and an outgoing personality. She played golf,
enjoyed watching all sports, and was a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan. She loved traveling, Mardi Gras, animals, the Matagorda County Fair and Livestock Show, and an “occasional opportunity” to gamble.

She also enjoyed baking (especially during the holidays) as well as playing Mrs. Claus each year for events associated with the Ladies Auxiliary, the Blessing Hotel, and the Lions Club.

Twyla’s life was centered on family, community, and service to others. Though her absence will be deeply felt, her memory and legacy will endure through her family and all who knew her.

The family wishes to express its gratitude to the medical professionals who cared for Twyla throughout the final weeks of her life, particularly the dedicated nurses of Clear Lake Heart Tower, PAM Health of Clear Lake, and Matagorda Regional Medical Center. Their skill and compassion provided comfort to Twyla and her family during an extraordinarily challenging time.

A celebration of life will be held at the Calvery Baptist Church in Bay City, TX on October 3, 2026, at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Twyla’s memory may consider a donation to the Ladies Auxiliary Unit Post 649, the Blessing Historical Foundation, or the Midfield Community Church.
